Reliance Green Energy PTE LTD successfully completed the installation of two Liam-F1 Model R-1600 (5kW) vertical-axis wind turbines at Infineon Singapore, with one turbine positioned near each of the facility’s two cooling towers.
This project demonstrates the use of cooling-tower airflow as an energy source, with specially designed wind deflectors directing the strong air draught generated by the cooling towers toward the Liam-F1 turbines. The project involved the complete process from wind turbine transportation and site preparation to mounting, electrical installation, commissioning, inspection and handover.
Two wind turbines installed at cooling towers of Infineon Singapore
Two Liam-F1 Model R-1600 turbines were installed strategically near the cooling towers, with one turbine serving each cooling tower airflow area. The installation incorporates wind deflectors designed to guide and concentrate the cooling tower's strong air draught toward the turbine, helping the vertical-axis turbines capture the available airflow and convert it into rotational energy.
The Liam-F1 wind turbines and associated installation components were transported to the Infineon Singapore project site. The equipment was carefully prepared for site installation, including the turbine units, mounting structures, electrical components and supporting materials.
The installation began with preparation of the mounting locations near the cooling towers. A dedicated concrete foundation was constructed to provide a stable and secure base for the wind turbine mounting poles.
Foundation Size: 1.2m × 1.2m × 0.6m
The concrete foundation was designed to support the hot-dipped galvanised mounting structure and provide the required stability for the turbine installation. The foundation was completed and prepared for installation of the mounting pole.
A two-section hot-dipped galvanised steel mounting pole was installed to support each Liam-F1 wind turbine. The galvanised construction provides a durable mounting structure suitable for the outdoor industrial environment.
A specially positioned wind deflector was installed near the cooling tower to redirect the strong airflow generated by the air-conditioning cooling tower toward the Liam-F1 turbine. This component is an important part of the installation because it helps direct the available airflow toward the turbine.
The Liam-F1 Model R-1600 turbine was carefully positioned and secured onto the prepared mounting structure. The turbine was aligned with the airflow path created by the cooling tower and wind-deflector arrangement.
Two Liam-F1 R-1600 turbines were installed, with one turbine positioned near each cooling tower. The completed arrangement allows each turbine to utilize the airflow available around its respective cooling tower.
Once the mechanical installation was completed, the electrical works were carried out to connect the turbines to the project's electrical system:
Two wind turbine controller/inverter units were installed inside the pump room at Infineon Singapore. These units form part of the electrical control and power-conversion system for the Liam-F1 turbines.
AC cables were laid for the three designated locations. The cables were routed through the prepared trunking system to provide the required electrical connections between the turbine system and the relevant electrical infrastructure.
Connection wiring completed to the main circuit. This stage connected the turbine system to the designated electrical infrastructure following completion of the cable installation.
The installation works have been successfully completed. As part of the final project completion process, the Liam-F1 turbines, mounting structures, wind deflectors, controllers, inverters, and all electrical connections were thoroughly inspected and verified to ensure proper installation and operation.
